Comparison

Pay-per-call vs subscription search APIs

Pay-per-call search APIs charge a fixed price for each delivered request, while subscription search APIs charge a monthly fee for a quota; for AI agents with bursty or low volume, per-call pricing avoids paying for unused quota, and with x402 an agent can pay without an account or API key.

Work out your break-even point

Break-even calculator (Python, runs as-is)

def monthly_cost_pay_per_call(calls: int, price_per_call: float = 0.005) -> float:
    return calls * price_per_call

def break_even_calls(plan_price: float, price_per_call: float = 0.005) -> int:
    """Calls per month at which a flat plan costs the same as paying per call."""
    return round(plan_price / price_per_call)

# Fill in the plan you are comparing against:
plan_price = 20.00 # monthly plan price in USD (example input, not a quote)
for calls in (100, 1_000, 10_000):
    print(calls, "calls/month ->", f"${monthly_cost_pay_per_call(calls):.2f} pay-per-call",
          f"vs ${plan_price:.2f} plan")
print("break-even:", break_even_calls(plan_price), "calls/month")

How to read it

Plug in the monthly price of any plan you are considering. Below the break-even number of calls, paying per call costs less; above it, the plan may. Count the calls your agent really makes, including retries, before you decide. AgentSearch only charges delivered calls, so failed requests don't count.

Where AgentSearch fits

AgentSearch is pay per call for all three tools: Web Search, Web Extract and Web Render are $0.005 each in USDC on Base via x402. Search also has a free tier: up to 25 searches/day per IP, no key needed (shared daily capacity; paid calls have no cap). Details: pricing · pay-per-call web search API.

FAQ

What is the difference between pay-per-call and subscription search APIs?

Pay-per-call APIs charge a fixed price for each delivered request. Subscription APIs charge a recurring fee for a quota, whether or not you use it.

When is pay-per-call cheaper?

When your monthly call count is below the plan price divided by the per-call price. At $0.005 per call, a plan costing P dollars a month breaks even at P / 0.005 calls.

Why does pay-per-call suit AI agents?

Agents call tools in bursts and can't sign up for accounts. With x402, an agent pays each request from a wallet with caps, so there is no key to manage and no cost when idle.

Does AgentSearch have a subscription?

No. Search, Extract and Render are $0.005 per call each, and Search has a free tier of up to 25 searches/day per IP.
